About Birmingham City University
Birmingham’s University of Central England was rechristened as Birmingham City University in 2007 and a new logo of this institution was adopted. The university actually descended from the original Birmingham College of Commerce - one of the five colleges that formed Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971. The five colleges are the Arts, Jewellery, Architecture, Music and Commerce, which were merged at different times to form the Birmingham Polytechnic.
To begin with, the oldest of them, namely, the College of Arts, was originally established in 1843, as a forum of artists subsequently got changed to Arts College in 1884. Later, this college moved to a new palatial building at Margaret Street, which still houses it and this premise has become a Grade I building coming under heritage category.
The second college, namely, the College of Jewellery, started in 1888 in a separate house later moved in 1890 to its present location at Victoria Street, from where it is still functioning. Similarly, the College of Architecture, which started in 1909 and later got recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architect in 1930, ultimately became a reputed centre of excellence over the years.
After it merged with Birmingham Polytechnic, it became a lead department of Built Environment and later established itself as a premier institute of its kind in the country. Following other categories, the College of Music progressed and prospered and ultimately came to be known as Birmingham and Midland Institute around 1859, which later shifted to its present location in 1973.
By a government order in 1972, all polytechnics of the country were conferred status of “University” and as such it was renamed the University of Central England of Birmingham, which was later rechristened Birmingham City University.
When this university merged with the Birmingham and Solihull College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1995, the study of Nursing and Midwifery was introduced in this university. A new chapter was added to this university when in 2000, Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) was created from its earlier Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology.
Another milestone was introduced when Faculty of Education along with Faculty of Health was introduced. Library and Learning Resources streams also merged with Birmingham City University. At present, there are seven libraries, including the biggest health library, namely, Mary Seacole Library, amongst them.
It is well known that research plays a vital role in any university’s progress and helps it to achieve its objectives. In Birmingham City University case, it nourishes and nurtures the potential of all the researchers alike and accordingly helps them to be successful in their respective dedicated field of work.
The fruits of their results are passed to different industries to commercially extract mileage, which benefits both parties in a big way to take mutual advantages. In a nutshell, it can be said that the university provides the best possible environment for carrying out the most modern and extensive research work in any field of study. Hence the university has rightly been referred to as a centre of excellence in providing research facilities.
